Spend time with your kids v lots of clubs
By Chris Barton
Okay, I know the popular theories of parenting today tend to lean towards providing your children with many and varied clubs and sports activities in which to participate, but is that really the best we can do as parents? Our oldest son, Wesley, has recently turned 13. He is out at school all day, catching a bus early in the morning and getting back just before teatime (supper). He is part of our church youth group, another youth group, Sea Cadets, and guitar lessons. We've hardly been seeing him! As parents we've been reading a book about parenting which has been very interesting, "How to have a new child by Friday", by Dr. Kevin Lemen. One of the pointers given was to spend time with your children rather than sending them off to clubs so much. Parenting takes time - and how do we expect to have a positive influence on our children when we're not with them? It's an interesting thought, and one which we are going to put into action this week. Wesley might have less clubs to be part of, but he will have more time to be with us, play with us, talk and so on. Maybe some of the girl/boy talks, or smoking discussions, or talks about other scary subjects will come easier as we spend more time together? Parenting is a tricky business - get to know your kids by spending time with them. :) |
