Putting my 4 year old to bed

Our son, David, is 4 years old. He's a very boisterous child, and for while we had trouble keeping him in bed. This is our tip for a good bedtime. Be consistent.
I suppose this goes for all discipline in parenting, but it really helps a child to know where they stand: do you mean what you say and are you sending a consistent message? Have a routine.
We've found it has helped David at bedtime to know what is coming next. In his case we follow the same procedure each night: get pyjamas on, brush teeth, go to the toilet. Once in the bedroom David gets a story, a song, we pray together for him and for others, a hug and kiss, lights out, stay in bed. Time to wind down.
David loves hearing a story, and enjoys all the rest of the routine. It's kind of his wind down time to go through all the steps in our routine, ending up with lights out and saying goodnight. Stay in bed.
We went through a stage where David got out of bed, and wasn't behaving well; coming downstairs, turning on the lights, etc. We have spanked him sometimes (I can hear the flame comments rising up), but here are a couple of tricks which helped keep David in bed: 1. Have quiet music playing - if David got out of bed then the music would be turned off. 2. Stand outside the door - if David got out of bed and went to the door we would be there to take him right back. (This was actually pretty funny one time) Now I don't say this is foolproof - children are all individuals, but it has been a useful tool for us, and I hope some of this will be helpful to you too.
